Time-of-Use Rates for Electricity

With Time-of-Use prices, the price of electricity depends on when you use it.

There are three different Time-of-Use prices. These prices are set by the Ontario Energy Board and are reviewed every May 1 and November 1.

Time-of-Use rates effective November 1, 2016 are as follows:

  • On-peak (7 AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 7 PM weekdays) = 18.0 cents per kWh
  • Mid-peak (11 AM to 5 PM weekdays) = 13.2 cents per kWh
  • Off-peak (7 PM to 7 AM weekdays & weekends/holidays) = 8.7 cents per kWh

Time-of-use prices reflect the fact that the cost to provide electricity changes throughout the day. When demand is low, less expensive sources of electricity are used. When demand rises, more expensive forms of electricity production are called upon, making prices higher.
