How To Save Energy!

Electricity powers our community. It helps us get out of bed each morning, have productive days at work and school and enjoy our many shops and restaurants. Our schools, offices, hospitals, community centres, parks and homes all depend upon electricity. Thanks to the hard work of Guelph Hydro employees, our community has one of the most effective and reliable energy systems in the province.

We can’t take our energy usage for granted. Being more efficient in how we use electricity will have a big payback to the amount of energy Ontario needs to produce. This will help us reduce our green gas emission. How? Generating electricity needs a lot of energy, mostly heat produced from coal, gas or nuclear plants. In most cases when energy is made at a power plant, some 60 per cent of the energy is lost as waste heat. Another 10 per cent is lost in electricity lines and transformers before the electricity even reaches your home. Once your light is turned on it not only lights your room but produces heat as well. So, by the time your light is turned on, nearly 95% of the energy created at the power plant has been lost.
