When the power goes out, your smart meter and various monitoring and control devices instantly communicate with our Control Room. This alerts our 24/7 Control Room Operators that there is a problem,
However, in the event of a widespread power outage, we may not be able to pinpoint the location of small outages.
You can help by reporting the location of power outages. Let us know if you know the cause, such as a car hitting a pole, let us know.

Four phases of power restoration |
In the event of a large power outage, Guelph Hydro restores power in phases.
- Phase 1 - We work to restore power first to hospitals, water pumping stations, waste treatment plants and other critical community services.
- Phase 2 - Next, we restore power to other important community services. These can include community centres, retirement homes, locations of emergency services and other important locations.
- Phase 3 - Then we work to restore power to as many large groups of customers as possible by reconnecting neighbourhoods or streets.
- Phase 4 - Finally, we restore power to individual homes and businesses.
