Time-of-Use Rates for Electricity

The vast majority of Ontario electricity users pay Time-of-Use rates for the electricity they consume. These rates are set by the Ontario Energy Board.

There are three Time-of-Use price periods:

  • Off-peak - This is when demand for electricity is the lowest. Ontario households use most of their electricity - nearly two thirds of it - during off-peak hours which include weekends and holidays.
  • Mid-peak - This is when demand for electricity is moderate. These periods are during the daytime, but are not the busiest times of day.
  • On-peak  - This is when demand is the highest. The busiest times of day are generally when people are cooking, firing up their computers and running heaters or air conditioners.
